 The initial anger I felt finally settled as a palpable sadness. It was the constant berating of a biracial woman in the public eye—and the revelation that her in-law family was panicked by the pigmentation of their next heir—that really sank my heart. This is the public racism I’ve become accustomed to—covert and veiled, but very clearly there, and often excused as fair critique. This “fair” critique is passable on Twitter and it’s passable in print as long as you don’t mention the color of the woman you’re tearing to shreds, as long as you don’t actually say the n-word. You can hammer her into submission, her only means of power being to escape, just as long as you don’t comment on her specific ancestry.

It’s the plausible deniability of racism (“I didn’t use racist words, your honor”) that’s leaving me miserable. Millions of us can see the racist undertones in the Markle tale, the palpable prejudice is looking us square in the face but it’s being denied across the board. I have the sinking realization that there’s a world outside our bubble that can’t abide Black success, can’t quite let it flourish. That no matter how far we climb (marrying a prince, for Christ’s sake!), we still have work to do. Was it so long ago that Meghan’s mother taught us all a lesson in quiet dignity at her daughter’s wedding? How did this so quickly become ancient history?
